Dear Parents, It is time for our annual field trip to the North Carolina Zoological Park in Ashboro, NC! Our field trip will take place on January 24, 2005. All students need to be sure to arrive to school on time, for we will be loading the buses immediately after the tardy bell rings. Each student should bring a bag lunch with a drink, each clearly marked with their first and last name, as well as my name so that the lunches will be placed in the right class coolers. Layered clothing is also highly recommended, for the journey through the zoological park primarily consists of walking outside, and it will be chilly. Our trip to the North Carolina zoo is going to focus on the North America exhibit. Right now in our class, we have been reading stories about prairies. The zoo has an 11-acre exhibit on prairies complete with bison and elk, which the students have learned a great deal about from their reading. I am excited to be able to let my students observe these amazing creatures first-hand in January. There is also an exhibit of the Sonora Desert that showcases the organisms that live in the hotter climates of the United States that most of my native North Carolinian students have yet to discover. Upon our return, we will be doing an individual research project about life in the desert, so this trip is a great way for my students to find a sparked interest in a particular aspect of desert life that they may want to delve into further when we start our project. To find out more information about the North Carolina Zoological Park, visit www.nczoo.org. Aside from our preparations for our trip to the zoo, we have also been working on our writing and vocabulary skills a great deal recently. Be sure to check the spelling list each week as well as the homework assignments, and be sure to monitor your son or daughter's progress throughout the week on these assignments. Everyone has been doing a great job of turning in assignments completed and on time so far this year, and for your help in that, I thank you! Parent-teacher conferences are coming up soon as the end of the nine weeks nears. I look forward to seeing each and every one of you for conferences. In the next week, I will be sending out a more detailed letter about this process. Be sure to keep an eye out for that handout. Thanks again for everything you do for your students as well as for our classroom as a whole! It does not go unnoticed, and it is greatly appreciated! Let me know if there is anything more that I can do for you! Have a wonderful day! Sincerely Yours, Miss Beth Sherron
