This README file is to accompany the following file:

tngwr18a.zip Tengwar fonts for Windows w/MS-Word utils

What is this:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tengwar-Quenya and Tengwar-Sindarin are MS-Windows 3.1 compatible Truetype (and
ATM) fonts for the Elvish Tengwar alphabet. They can be used to write Elf
language inscriptions with MS-Windows applications. (Quenya and Sindarin are two
of the languages used by the Elves in J.R.R. Tolkien's book: "Lord of the
Rings".) Also included documents detailing the keyboard mapping of all
characters in the font.

These fonts are Postcard-ware. If you like these fonts, please send me a letter
or postcard (using an attractive or interesting stamp) to the address written
below. If you supply me with your email address, I'll try to write back. If you
do write, please tell me of your Tolkien language interests. And feel free to
offer any constructive suggestions for improving the fonts and the accompanying
documentation.

These fonts can not be sold for a profit. (Although if you would like to send
the author some money, it will be gladly accepted.) CD-ROM and Shareware
distributors are requested to notify the author before distributing these fonts.

These fonts may be used in any publication. Please notify me if these fonts do
appear in a publication, I'd like to get a copy of it, and I may be able to
provide assistance by creating a custom font for your publication.

How to install a MS-Windows-3.1 Truetype font:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you don't know how to install new Truetype fonts, follow the directions
below (Since you are reading this file, I will assume that you have already
"PKUNZIP'ed" the ZIP file onto a temp directory on your hard disk.):

  - Start MS-Windows-3.1.
  - Go to the MAIN folder and select CONTROL PANEL.
  - Select FONTS.
  - Select ADD.
  - In this dialog box, go to the section marked 'Drives' and use the
scroll buttons to click on the drive (C:, D:, or whatever) you
    have the unzipped files to.
  - Use the section marked 'Directories' to the left of 'Drives' to
select the directory the unzipped files are in.
  - The font names will appear in the section marked 'List of Fonts'.
  - Click on the font you want to install (using the mouse).
  - Click on 'OK'.

This should install the font so that your Windows applications can use it.
Don't forget to check the TENGWAR.WRI and/or the TENGWAR.DOC file included in
the ZIP file. It will explain the key-mapping and show an example of font usage.

Before trying to print-out either document, you will need to change it's page
layout to match the paper size of your printer output. The TENGWAR.DOC file
is formatted so that it should fit easily on either a European 'A4' or US 'A'
(8.5"x11") page.

How to install a MS-Word 6.0 macros and toolbars:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To install the macros and toolbars:

  - Start MS-Windows-3.1.
  - Start Microsoft Word 6.0.
  - From Microsoft Word 6.0 "File" drop-down menu, open the
    "TENGWAR.DOT" file.

(A dialog box will appear and ask you for permission to continue
    with the installation.)

  - Click on the "Yes" pushbutton (using the mouse).

The toolbar and macros will now become part of your normal Word set-up.

What if you can't use the MS-Word-6.0 WordBasic Macro:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you don't have MS-Word-6.0, then you won't be able to use the MS-Word-6.0
WordBasic macros. That's a shame, because without the macros the font can be
difficult to use. This is due to the nature of the Tengwar alphabet. While the
English alphabet contains 26 consonants and vowels, Tengwar contains close to
50 consonants, a dozen vowels, plus even more modifying symbols. Altogether
there are over 140 different symbols in this font and not all characters are
easily accessible via a single key on the keyboard.

The MS-Word-6.0 WordBasic macros display a large window containing many push-
buttons. Each push button is labeled and represents a Tengwar symbol, By using
the macros you don't have to remember which key on the keyboard is for which
symbol.

If you use another word processor, and understand it's macro-language, and
create a similar utility, please pass it along to me and other Tengwar fans.

How to view the MS-Word document without MS-Word:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you don't have MS-Word, then you won't be able to directly view the enclosed
MS-Word document. To view the document, your options are as follows:

1) If you have access to the Internet, download Microsoft's FREEWARE
MS-Word document viewer. It is available on their BBS, their Web Site or
   via anonymous FTP at:

     "www.microsoft.com" or "ftp.microsoft.com"

(Note: "wordvu.exe" is 1.4-Megabytes in size!)

2) If you have a different MS-Windows-3.1 based word processor (such as
WordPerfect or AMI-PRO, you should be able to load the MS-Word document
   directly into your word processor.

If you use Tengwar 1.7
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In September 1995 I released earlier versions of the 'Tengwar Quenya' and
'Tengwar Sindarin' fonts. These new fonts should be completely compatible with
any work that you have done with the old fonts.

If you use Tengwar 1.6
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In May 1995 I released an earlier version of the 'Tengwar Quenya' font. These
new fonts should be completely compatible with any work that you have done with
the old fonts.

If you use Tengwar 1.1
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In January 1994 I released an earlier version of this font. It was QUENYA11.ZIP
and appears to be in wide circulation on Internet. If you are currently using
this earlier version: Be Warned - the keyboard mapping is different in the newer
versions (1.6 and up) of the font. Unless you have written a great deal of
Tengwar inscriptions, I recommend that you give this new version a try. Among
the advantages of using version 1.7 are; greatly enhanced documentation, the
MS-Word macros, and dozens of additional Tengwar and Tehta symbols and
variations of symbols.

Here's what's being worked on:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More Tengwar fonts of differing styles, but with Identical keyboard mapping,
so that they can all be used with the WordBasic Macros and other utilities.

Tengwar Capital letters ? - I've heard rumors that these exist, bit I've never
seen any.
