On The Third Day is my favorite ELO album. It has everything. An orchestral suite (all of side one, tracks 1-4), a hard rocker (Ma-Ma Belle), a snappy instrumental (Daybreaker), a pretentious composer cover (In The Hall Of The Mountian King), and two other strong tracks (Showdown and Dreaming Of 4000). I do believe that if Jeff Lynne had the restraints of recording for the vinyl format removed, we would have had an album that resembled what is heard on the Live at the BBC record. The orchestral concrete that cements the tracks together are prominate on this album and will appear again on Face The Music, and Time. |
