THE BASIS BEHIND CHOOSING “NAVRAS”

Regardless of one's opinion about the Matrix trilogy, I believe that Navras stands out not only as a complement to the movie (Matrix Revolutions) but also on it’s own; the song is played at the very end of the third and final installment of the trilogy, and it is the last thing that audiences hear when they leave the theatres.

What I found the most interesting was that Navras is a Hindu word that stands for nine emotional states that are expressed through the arts. The chant repeated throughout the song is taken from the Brhadarahyaka Upanisad (1.3.28), a sacred text in India. The translation of chant, “From Delusion lead me to truth, From darkness lead me to light, From death lead me to immortality, Let there be peace everywhere,” represents the closure and peace at the end of the movie. In the world of the Matrix, Neo has given his sacrifice and brought peace to the world.

The medium of this song is especially unique. Following the theme of the nine emotional states, the song changes ‘attitude’ and medium several times. It also is 9:08 minutes long. At the beginning, the song’s choir component salutes the end of a epic, and thus signals the beginning of the changes. The different mediums used in this piece vary from choir chants to orchestral numbers to techno rhythms and drum beats.

When I listen to this song, I always feel swept away in the beat of the music and the very grand epic-quality of this work. The sound is very thick and heavy, but almost has a royal grandeur to it. I think that the meaning and work that the producers/writers put into this piece makes it all the more fitting and enjoyable.
