My second car was a 1993 Dodge Stealth Twin Turbo. I purchased it in August
of 1996 with only 30,000 kms on the clock. It was pretty much fully loaded with
keyless entry, AWD, AWS (same phase), LSD, leather interior, adjustable suspension,
adjustable exhaust note, 300 hp, twin turbos, twin intercoolers, 17 inch wheels,
245/45 profile tires, 8 way adjustable power seats and more. It had a stock
estimated 0-60mph time of under 6 seconds, and a 14 second quarter-mile.
To this day, I still miss it. I managed to top it out with all season tires,
after a rain, at night, at about 220 km/h on a bumpy two lane highway. Now granted,
the top speed of the car is factory limited to about 250 km/h, but considering
the conditions, it was not too shabby.
I sold the car in June of 1998, partially because the car was notoriously prone
to transmission breakdown in the synchros. I replaced the original tranny under
warranty at an estimated cost to the dealership of about $7000 (which, including
labour, would be close to $10000). That incident really scared me, as I was
only a student at that time, and would never be able to replace the tranny should
it break down after the warranty had expired. This, added to the fact that I
never truly got to use the 300 hp of the car, and that I was paying about $45
for every tank of gas that I used, prompted me to sell the car.
I sold the car to a really cool engineer guy that lives in Saskatchewan, and
he reports that the car has given him no problems. With the many highways there,
at least he will get to use the car much more than I ever did.
