Frequently Asked Questions
What size of turkey should I buy? The size of the turkey has many variables: - Are you feeding adults? Children? - What kind of appetites do your guests have? - Do you want leftovers? In general, we recommend somewhere around 1.5 pounds per person.
What do I do with the turkey when I get home? The most important thing is to always keep your turkey chilled, preferably in the refrigerator. The turkey has been cleaned and washed. And yes, the feathers are off! We suggest that you simply rewash the turkey prior to cooking. Things NOT to do: Never leave your turkey in the car for several hours. In warm weather, get your turkey home immediately and refrigerate.
What is the DIFFERENCE between an Elm Turkey Farm fresh turkey and a store bought turkey? Store bought turkeys are most often injected with antibiotics, growth hormones, preservatives, and who knows what other chemicals. They were prepared months in advance, frozen, and eventually shipped to local supermarkets. Elm Turkey Farm turkeys are raised here in our barn. They are fed a planned diet of straight grain. We do not use any antibiotics, growth hormones, preservatives or other chemicals. They are not pets. They are responsibly cared for on a daily basis with the intention of providing our customers with a delicious, healthy turkey for the holidays. Our turkeys are not "free range" turkeys. Free range turkeys are just that, raised outdoors, in open areas, eating off the land. Our turkeys are raised in the barn, in large pens where they can freely move about. The area must be kept very clean, as turkeys are very susceptible to illness. This means they are either up on wood slats so that the droppings fall down below or on wood shavings which are periodically changed.
