LIGHTS: One UVB fluorescent bulb in the top area, which is where he spends the most time.
One regular fluorescent in the lower area to brighten it up. (If you have enough money buy a UVB fluorescent for all areas.)
A ceramic heat lamp that fits in a regular light bulb socket.
There are red and blue heat lamps that fit in regular light bulb sockets. I've used them, but the ceramic one is supposed to last a lot longer and be more cost effective in the long run. If you want to see your iguana at night, get one of the colored heat lamps. They aren't very bright so they don't disturb your iguana. |
| I used a ceramic dog dish for food. He hasn't tipped it over yet, but I might need to get a bigger one. |
FOOD: I mainly feed him romaine lettuce and collard greens. Both of those contain vitamins A and C.
I feed him once a day.
In the fall my mom shreds pumpkins and freezes them. I read somewhere that orange squash is good for iguanas. I sprinkle it over his greens.
Sometimes he gets shredded carrots on his greens.
For variety I give him some red or dark green lettuce with his romaine and collard greens. I never give him iceberg lettuce. There are absolutely no nutrients in iceberg.
Iguanas are vegetarians. No cheese and no meat!!!
I sprinkle vitamins over his food. The brand I use is Tetra Terrafauna Vitalife Reptile Supplement. They must be good. He is healthy! |
| I have a large, shallow pan in the bottom of his cage. I've never seen him drink water and have read other information that says they don't drink, so it is not for drinking. He uses it to help him poop. When he was smaller I put him in the bathtub with a little water and he would poop in there. He doesn't like the tub any more. Most of the time he poops in the pan and it makes it easy to clean up. I need to put vinyl flooring on the floor of the cage because the water is wrecking the wood. |
| My mom saw an iguana in a pet store that had a messed up nose. He had been kept in a wire cage and rubbed the end of his nose off trying to get out. If they are in a wire cage it needs to have a thick, vinyl coating. |
| Be sure to touch and handle your iguana as much as you can. If you don't they will be afraid of you. When they are bigger they will hurt you to keep you away. If you are having trouble touching yours try touching it a lot when it is eating. If it is hungry enough it will let you. |
| Right after I got mine I thought he had died. It was night time and he was lying flat on his belly with his legs to the side. He didn't move at all. When they go to sleep they REALLY go to sleep! |
