This course observes the Anglo-Arab cultural and literary relationships since the nineteenth century. Around three interrelated issues: the quest for national identity, the re-presentation of the ‘English ’- the other, and the literary English influences on a selection of literary texts by Mahfouz, Al-Hakïm , T. Sälah, Y. Idrï s, the Neoclassical, Romantic and Tammüzï poets, among others.

Week 1(Oct.5,7,and 9) Definitions of Comparative Literature that put into  consideration Modern Arabic Literature and the west.

Weeks 2-3 ( Oct. 12,14,16,19,21,and 23) Samples of comparative literary criticisms that compares English /Arabic literary texts, writers ,or literary movements . Literary texts include E.A.Poe’s ‘The Thousand –and-Second Tale of Scheherazade’, A.Tennyson’s  Recollections of the Arabian Nights’ and (or) W. Wordsworth’s The Prelude

Week 4  ( Oct. 26,28,and 30) Modern Arabic Novel and the English Novel and the West

Week 5    (Nov.2,4,and 6)  Novels of Nagib Mahfouz with special refernce to The Trilogy. and Discussion of Quiz 1

                   Thursday  Nov.02 Quiz 1 includes objective questions and short answers.

Week 6         (Nov.9,11,and  13 Modern Arabic poetry with  special reference to English Influence in Arabic Romantic Poetry of A. Shukri, I.Naji, A. Al-Shabbi and others.,      

                  Thursday  Nov. 13  Midterm Exam 1  (short essay answers)

Week 7   ( Nov.16,18,and 20) Modern Arabic poetry with  special reference to English Influence in Arabic Romantic Poetry of A. Shukri, I.Naji, A. Al-Shabbi and others.

Week 8     ( Nov.23,25,and 27)  Modern Arabic Poetry with special reference to the Influence of T.S.Eliot in Arabic Poetry of Al-Sayyab , Jabra, and others.

Week 9  ( Nov.30, Dec.2 and 4) Modern Arabic Poetry with special reference to the Influence of T.S.Eliot in Arabic Poetry of Al-Sayyab , Jabra, and others.

Week 10     (Dec.7, 9 and 11)   Modern Arabic Drama and the English Drama with special reference to Theatre of the Absurd : Beckett's Waiting For Goddot and Al-Farafeer.
