This course observes the Anglo-Arab cultural and
literary relationships since the nineteenth century. Around three interrelated
issues: the quest for national identity, the re-presentation of the ‘English ’-
the other, and the literary English influences on a selection of literary texts
by Mahfouz, Al-Hakïm , T. Sälah, Y. Idrï s, the Neoclassical, Romantic and
Tammüzï poets, among others.

9) Definitions of Comparative Literature that put into consideration Modern Arabic Literature and
the west.
Weeks 2-3
( Oct. 12,14,16,19,21,and 23) Samples of comparative literary criticisms that
compares English /Arabic literary texts, writers ,or literary movements .
Literary texts include E.A.Poe’s ‘The Thousand –and-Second Tale of
Scheherazade’, A.Tennyson’s
Recollections of the Arabian Nights’ and (or) W. Wordsworth’s The
