west ,their literature has been subject to more and more influences from it .’

Part B : Fiction

b.1. In the trilogy though Britain seems as Egypt’s colonizer and later ally, Mahfouz lets some 
characters participate in anti-British demonstrations seeking independence from Britain .

b.1.a.Discuss this statement with reference to these situations and characters in each part of the
trilogy ( name the part).

b2. Mustafa Saeed in Al-Tayyib Salih does not share the British’s statement : “ You , Mr Saeed are
the best example of the fact that our civilizing mission in Africa is of no avail. After all the efforts
we’ve made to educate you , it’s as if you’d come out of the jungle for the first time.”

Part C : Poetry

c.1. Arab poets, however rebellious, are never negligent of tradition.c.1.a. Explain this statement and show how the influence
of T.S.Eliot on them helps (does not) the “continuity of tradition in most revolutionary poem of our time.” 

c.1.b. Use this poem “Buwab …/I wish I would have drowned in the very depths of my blood/That I might have
carried the burden with humankind/And resurrected life. Verily, my death is a triumph!” to analyze the
statement in c.1.( Mention the title of this poem and the poet-name.) 

c.2.a. Compare Jabra’s “A blade of grass split a stone …/It is the miracle of thunder to the waste land,/…and rain poured.”
and Sayigh’s “My land is a waste land /…My land/ Is a handful of earth /Which I lost.” in terms
of the symbols of the “waste land”.

c.2.b.the titles of these two poems, and c.2.c.the two poets’ lives,alienation,and visions.
