ADA MCMILLIAN was from the Chilton area and was known as the "Queen of the fiddlers" at the time of the county's centennial. Ada learned to play by ear- which was the proper way to play a fiddle. Like her parents, she played at many square dances. Square danceing was one of the pleasures and recreation of the pioneers. A log house required a house-warming in the form of a square dance, with plenty of eats and a not too meager supply of the home-made. Square dances and church meetings were held in the homes of the pioneers. These kept the early families in touch with each other. Square dances are a part of the Ozark heritage and heve helped to make Carter County unique and picturesque in its own particular way |
