We have now examined a variety of violent societies.  What social-structural and psycho-cultural characteristics do they have in common that contribute to their violence?  In what crucial ways are they different from non-violent societies?  Which one or two of these traits do you think are key to their violent tendencies?  Which of the common characteristics does American society also share?  Which of these traits could be addressed or changed in America, and how could it be done?

Essay Question #4                                                           Due Monday 7/7

We have now investigated the concept of ideological/religious violence, as well as several specific examples of such violence.  What social and cultural characteristics of violence in general--things that we have already discussed in other contexts--can also be found in ideological/religious violence?  What new or exaggerated aspects of violence are unique to or distinctly observable in ideological/religious violence?  What aspects of ideological/religious violence are present in American society, and where are they present?
