If you are using a different textbook, like Ferraro or Haviland, you will find some brief coverage in those texts in the last chapter or two.. Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict D. Development E. Cultural Survival and Revival II. The Culture of the Future Topics: 1. Cultural Dynamics Know why there are no "traditional" cultures. Know about innovation and diffusion. Be able to give examples. Be able to discuss why a change might be accepted, or rejected, or modified. Know about cultural loss, acculturation, genocide, and ethnocide, with examples. Know about directed change--in particular, colonialism and development. 2. Colonialism Know what colonialism is and what its goals and methods were. Wealth, control of land and resources, labor, markets, geopolitics, etc. Know how modern European colonialism began to establish a "global cultural system." Know what kinds of cultural changes were created by colonialism. Know what kinds of problems were created as colonies became "independent." Know what the "new states" were (former colonies) and their political and economic challenges. 3. Politics of New States How did colonialism end? Know about the two main paths to independence--transitional and revolutionary. Know about the role of Marxism in colonial struggles. Know the difference between a state, a nation, and a nation-state, with examples. Know what a multinational state and a multistate nation are, and why this is a problem. Know what ethnicity is: what does it mean to say that ethnic groups "do not fight about culture but fight WITH culture." What does it mean to say that ethnicity is about a combination of remembering, forgetting, interpreting, and inventing culture? What does it mean that ethnic groups have "claims" and "grievances"? 4. Economics of New States Know what the economic situation of most colonies was even after colonialism ended (why political independence did not end economic dependence). Know which new states are poor and why they are poor. Know what "development" is supposed to do for poor states. Know First World and Third World. Know about modernization/industrialization/Westernization. Know about "modernization theory" and "dependency theory." Know global apartheid. 5. The Future of Culture Know about indigenous people or Fourth World. Know about why development is a war on traditional societies/indigenous people. Know about globalization and the "global culture." Know about "jihad vs. McWorld." Know about cultural revitalization and as many examples of types of revitalization movements as we had time to discuss: for example, syncretism, fundamentalism, cargo cults, nativism, nationalism, messianism, etc. 6. Other Understand what it means to say that contemporary culture has been transformed into an identity/ideology system and then into a set of "cultural movements" Be prepared to apply your knowledge to a possible multimedia presentation. |
