| The sun sets upon us we give chase to the horizon seat belts unfastened music roaring windswept hair flying past the headrests, tumbling in the slipstream we crank it up even louder the emptiness of our lives magnified we're driving towards nothing except dying we let the conversation rumble on the desolate highway before the music takes over when a good song comes on silence coats out throats hoarse from smoke turning to out blown out minds this is a burn cruise by the way, every car trip is, when Applebee's & Hardee's pays up on Friday glazed gazing blank trees and fields fences barns the deer bounding through the headlights of no interest except to let memories imprint remember today it'll be the same tomorrow and next October yet our wasted youth will mingle with adulthood so we cruise for the golden blaze scraping the embers strengthening our friendships with a plant called marajuana these are reflections of times before college, uprooting useless forests, blurring the window with green smudge sunlight trickling down the car's dented side crackling speakers vibrate swirls of smoke linger, drifting, savored by four delinquents vainly clutching happiness as it slides in the opposite direction through the rolled down window, out the exhaust we rattle forward leaving smooth highway for suburban houses speeding away from our last bowl of bliss music still blaring we relish the sunset to it's last beam fading |
