Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil

Is a cum laude graduate of Broadcast Communication at the University of the Philippines but considers her rebirth as a Filipino, as a communicator and as an artist during her years at the Philippine Educational Theater Association through which she was able to immerse herself in the socio-political realities of her country because of its vision towards a national culture.

In 1990, she went back to her first love, took short courses in video and film at the Mowelfund Film Institute and later got a two-month video scholarship program at Cirnea, Paris, sponsored by the French Embassy and a visitorship program in London through the British Council.

Since then, she has become more active as writer, director and producer for a number of programs on television. She has also worked on film projects with some of the internationally-acclaimed directors in the country such as Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal and Mike de Leon.

At present, she is program manager for the news and public affairs department of GMA Network Inc., the leading TV station in the Philippines and handles a documentary anthology program as well as a weekly debate program.

Walang Bakas, (Without A Trace)
2003, a full-length digital
documentary-drama which features representative cases of missing persons from the time of President Ferdinand Marcos to the present under President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo. Written by Armando Lao for GMA Network, Inc. Aired on nationwide television Oct. 4 and Dec. 16, 2004.

As Director

Angels, 2001, a full-length digital movie feature about a young boy torn between freedom and loyalty to his blind parents. Written by Ricardo Lee for Fineline Productions, Star Cinema. World Premiere at Cinemanila Film Festival, December, 2001. Also screened at the UP Film Center's 14th International Women's Film Festival, March 2003. Presently screens at Cinema 1 Cable TV.

June 4, 4:30 pm, June 8, 6:30 pm, and June 28, 2:30 pm, Star Cinema will showcase, on Cinema One (Channel 22), a true-to-life story of a blind couple's journey, in the digital movie ANGELS.

It tells their story from the point of view of their 10-year-old boy who guides them through the streets of Third-World Manila in search of a normal family life.

It stars multi-awarded actors Gina Alajar and Nonie Buencamino. Child actor Angelo Caangay gives an outstanding performance as Jonathan.

Ellen Ongkeko directs from the script of Ricardo Lee.
