- Ask them what they think they need to know before they were to travel to a new place. If they do not mention it, lead them to thinking about why it is important to know what the weather will be like and what they will see.
- Tell the students that today we are going to be travel agents and that we have been asked to create a series of brochures about prairie and mountain states.
Lesson-
- Briefly go over the example that I have created.
- Go over the guidelines on the sheet. (SEE BELOW)
Travel Brochure Requirements:
- The state needs to be colored on the U.S. map and placed somewhere on your brochure
- You should have ALL OF the following sections:
- COVER
Name of your state
Animals that live in your state
Plants that live in your state
Tell what the weather is like in your state
Activities that can be done while visiting the area (places to go, things to do)
Any interesting facts that you think your visitors should know
- Randomly (by drawing sticks) assign each student a state and have them pick up their books and sheets of paper and begin their work.
Conclusion-
- Have the students share their brochures in front on the class.
ADAPTATIONS:
- ESL students could focus more on drawing the animals, plants, activities, and weather. Students could work on the project in pairs. The brochures could be published in book form.
ASSESSMENT:
- The brochures are the assessment. Students will need to demonstrate a clear understanding of their state, including the plants, animals and climates. Students will be rated on a 12 point scale with 2 pts. for every section (1 for information and 1 for drawing) totaling 12 points
