The True SexismSamuel Alito's nomination is proceeding to the full Senate following the committee vote in favor of the nomination, thus setting the stage for a possible filibuster. The Democrats are in a political quandary. There are at least sixty votes in favor of the nomination in the Senate, more than enough to stop a filibuster and move to a vote. Thus a filibuster would only serve to acknowledge their debt to the special interest groups that kept them in power for so long and are their main chance to regain power. Their angst still centers on the abortion issue. Their delusional belief system surrounding this so called right includes the fear that women will be reduced to political and sexual slavery if abortion is once again made illegal. In fact, the biased beliefs that kept women from exercising their full political rights for so long were not based on sex or the lack of a right to legally terminate an unwanted pregnancy. What kept women disempowered for so long was the same thing that kept other groups disempowered. The group in power simply refused to allow those being unfairly restricted to exercise their rights fully. They were denied equal access to education, employment opportunities, and economic and political power. The same tactics worked equally well on blacks and other minorities and on poor whites as well. Marriage and childbearing were unjustifiably targeted as the sources of female bondage, even though unmarried and non-pregnant women faced the same discrimination. Marriage actually worked to the benefit of women and children when men and women honorably fulfilled their obligations to their families. It enforced legal responsibility for the care of the children on the spouses and their extended families. It was also meant to ensure the family's support of the woman, both during the childbearing years and in her old age after a lifetime of supporting her family and her society by diligently raising and educating the next generation. Then a group of disgruntled women, unfairly restricted in their personal dreams and in some cases mistreated by dysfunctional families, lashed out at traditional women's roles. Instead of seeking to correct only the actual injustices limiting their personal freedoms, they sought liberation by attacking marriage and child raising as well. They supported the devious lie that women had to be sexually liberated to be politically liberated. That tragic error has led to the ongoing attack against emotionally and physically healthy, socially beneficial marriage between responsible adults, one man with one woman with the intent of forming a legal partnership to mutually support each other and the children produced by a monogamous sexual relationship between the two of them. The truth is that the only persons liberated by this belief were the men who could obtain sex without the responsibilities of marriage and child raising. It eventually relieved them of financial responsibilities after divorce that were the traditional due of the woman for her sacrifices within the marriage and the necessary child rearing years. It's not surprising that women wanted to avoid these responsibilities as well, given the long term nature and considerable work and expense of child raising. However, compounding one injustice with another hasn't solved the basic problem. Abortion was available in genuine medical emergencies before elective abortion was legalized. There wasn't a need for legal protection in such cases. In cases of rape or incest, the baby isn't the guilty party and there is no justification for imposing the death penalty on the unborn child. Abortion itself inflicts harm on her body, both short and long term, which the man never risks. The hazards of interrupting the physical changes in her body meant to prepare it to nurse a child are linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. The damage to her reproductive organs may mean an increased risk for miscarriage later when she wants a child. Injuries inflicted to her body during the procedure may be life threatening. The psychological trauma can be devastating for many years. This is not a simple, safe procedure at any stage of pregnancy given the overall picture of what it can do to the woman's health. The continued liberal insistence that women must support this folly of "abortion rights" to maintain their civil and economic rights is just plain political fraud. No other group has had to resort to such a tactic to ensure its rights. In fact, one black leader, Star Parker, has been decrying the disproportionate effect that abortion has had on the black community in her support of Judge Alito's nomination. In her column "Democrats Tried to Smear Alito" at http://www.gopusa.com/commentary/sparker/2006/sp_01181.shtml on page two, she says: "Even liberal black commentators are starting to understand that the problems in the black community today stem from family breakdown and destructive social behavior and not from racism. When have we heard from Kennedy on these problems? As Sen. Tom Coburn pointed out regarding the hearings, they are really about Roe v. Wade. Alito's impeccable credentials are irrelevant to the Democrats. They just want a judge who will provide assurance of upholding the current liberal abortion regime. However, there's no way that a rubber stamp on Roe v. Wade is a pro-black stance. Black women constitute 7 percent of the American population yet account for almost 40 percent of our abortions. The abortion scenario in America today is one of white liberals rolling out the welcome mat for black women to destroy their babies. Black America is destroying itself under the encouraging and approving eye of white, liberal, elitist America. About 400,000 black babies are destroyed each year. Thirteen million have been destroyed since the Roe v. Wade decision. Why isn't Kennedy thinking about this rather than grasping for ridiculously tenuous claims to smear Alito and brand him a racist? Blacks, as well as all Americans, need courts that are not about politics but are about law. We need judges who preserve the integrity of the constitution and who will protect life, liberty, and property." I urge you to read the entire column. She has declared this the true racism, and she is right. It is also the true sexism, and we should not be hesitant to declare this to the world, especially to the latest generation of young women who need to hear the truth about so called abortion rights and so called sexual liberation when they're making their choices about their lives and their children's lives.
