The Devil's Face in New York

America and much of the world is in mourning over the innocent people murdered when terrorists flew hijacked civilian airliners into the World Trade Center buildings, the Pentagon, and a field. Among the cries for vengeance is the haunting question, how could they do such a thing? How could people intelligent enough to pilot an airplane be convinced to die to ensure the murder of thousands of innocent people? The answer is a glimpse at the remorseless face of our adversary Satan.

The young men recruited for these suicide missions are usually from deeply impoverished backgrounds, taught from early childhood to hate those the adults present as responsible for their plight. Only a few like bin Laden, the terrorist leader suspected of being responsible for this horrendous act of terrorism, are wealthy. They are promised an afterlife of honor, luxury, and pleasure for dying as a martyr for the cause.

This dual deception is enough to convince both these men and their families that their deaths are a worthy end to promote the well-being of their people in a struggle against a ruthless enemy. No matter how many of them die, some of them still children, no matter how little progress their families make out of their misery, the lie is so strong that more young men step forward to take their place.

Satan is a liar and a murderer and a thief. He uses lies to steal the hopes, the dreams, and ultimately the lives of those who succumb to his promises of a better life if they follow his ways. Neither the lives of the civilians killed this week nor the lives of the deceived terrorists who committed the deed will buy a better life for the Palestinians and other Arab groups who have turned to terrorism to achieve their political goals. It will only buy more misery and bloodshed for them.

Still, they refuse to believe that there could be a better way to solve their problems. Their instructors carefully and skillfully focus their attention on their intended targets, drilling the lessons home again and again and again. How ironic that they rage against the "Great Satan", when the real Satan is precisely who is causing their misery, not the United States, Israel, or other allies.

One day soon, Jesus Christ will return to put an end to all the works of the Devil, including all of his lies. When that happens, He promises that the Arab peoples will be beloved as the Jews are. That will be the ultimate end of terrorism, the love and truth of God for us all.
