WHY A BABY CRIES

   CAUSE                                     INDICATIONS                                               WHAT TO DO

Two hours since last feeding.  Baby may make sucking motions.


Hot day; baby perspiring.


Change in color or appearance.  Cold symptoms.  Diarrhea.


Baby missed nap or has had more stimulation than usual (e.g., company).  Baby may yawn or put hands to eyes.


Soiled diaper.  Cold or hot room.  Bathwater too hot or cold.  Cold tight or stiff.

Baby may pull up legs, scream, pass wind.



Stops crying when picked up.

Give milk or formula.



Give water or diluted fruit juice.

Consult medical book or pediatrician.


Put to bed.  If baby can't sleep, rock or walk her.



Check for and change source of discomfort.

Burp baby.  Lay him on his stomach.  Carry, rock, or take for a drive.

Hold baby or put in carrier.  Or position older baby so that she can see you.
