Songwriting

Songwriting is, to my knowledge, the most ancient way to tell a story, or to make art out of words. The first poems were sung...the words were easier to remember that way. Now we write songs not out of pracitcal necessity (we have paper to hold our stories for us), but out of a deeper need to tap into the magic that happens when words and music fit together to make something greater than the sum of the two. This web page is dedicated to the art of songwriting and to the songwriters themselves.

Of course, we're all indebted to the big guys like Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and Jackson Browne. But here are some songwriters with whom you may not be familiar. Check out my picks for their most noteable (no pun intended!) lyrics, then visit their sites to hear audio clips for the complete experience!

Paul Gross - he's not a Mountie, but he plays one on TV. He writes songs, too, and he does it well. On his new album with David Keeley, "Two Houses," he follows in the proud tradition of Canadian Great Lakes Shipwreck Songs.

Kevin Welch - one of a host of talented songwriters with Deadreckoning, a virtual wellspring of great music! Check out some of Kevin's lyrics here, then venture on over to Deadreckoning and listen to audio clips from the whole crew.

Megan Metcalfe - Her debut indie release, "Love Is An Outlaw," held some of the most promising songwriting I've heard in a long time. Here's hoping for a second album....

Jay Semko - formerly of the Northern Pikes, and another "Due South" alum. His songs have a certain cool quirkiness that you just can't put your finger on. In other words, he's quintessentially Canadian.
