"And the musician shall take flight..."

-- from the Koran

A Tribute to Jaki Byard.

The Piano Player
(For Jaki)

Black fingers curl
stiffly over white keys,
propped on air.

Suddenly a be-bop boogie
breaks loose and his fingers
coax the keyboard
as if it were 1948
and nothing had changed.

Jazz in EbMaj7
(For Jaki Byard and Alan Dawson)

There is a sorrow song so old and so
slow and so deep in the soul
of a race that it cannot
be played.

Yet it falls,
out of moist breath
and quick fingers
whistling through woodwinds
shaking lanky strings,
tuning itself to the time.
