Encounters

I would like to dedicate this page to our stories of when we met Stefanie. I've heard some great accounts, and reading about them always makes me smile! I welcome your stories and photos [email protected].

Betty from NY writes about her experiences on May 20 2001:

Me, Vic, Michele and Leslie went to hear Stefanie speak at the National Press Club in Washington, DC regarding the bush meat crisis in Africa.

There were about 100 people there. There probably would have been a lot more, except that people thought it was The George Bush meat crisis. We were sitting at our table near the door when Stefanie arrived. She looked gorgeous. Her hair was long and wavy and she wore a green pants outfit. She was smiling and surrounded by people. Lunch was served, (tuna steak) and she was introduced by the MC who have short bio of her life, mentioning how important h2h was to her and quoting RJ about how she can get down in the mud and then wear an evening gown a short time later.

She made her way to the podium and spoke for about a half hour, explaining the problem of logging, and how the animals are killed. Then people posed questions to her which she answered expertly. She spoke some French, noting some people in the audience.

After the remarks, many of the people approached the podium as did we. We waited our turn and Vic went up first and gave Stefanie a sketch she did of chimp. She told Stefanie who we were, and Stefanie was so surprised and thrilled that some of her fans came to see her. She asked us how we found out and told that her that Nancy spread the word. She screamed out, "What would I do without Nancy?" She told rest of the people around the dias to move and she called us to the side and and said "let's take some pictures." She posed with each one of us on the platform and spoke to us. She was so warm and happy. Then we waited until she left and made our way downstairs where a woman who was at the luncheon was asking us questions about Stefanie. She said she was a wildlife advocate and came to hear Stefanie speak. She said she was a French teacher and that Stefanie spoke perfect French.

Thanks Betty!

Here are the comments of a resident in the town of St. Lambert, Quebec, Canada. His street and neighbour's house were used in the filming of Someone is Watching.

I only saw the chaos from time to time when I came by. The whole thing must have taken at least a month, and I'm sure the neighbors got a decent amount of money for the inconvenience! They had to vacate the place entirely for the whole time, after all. It's amazing how much work goes into filming even a small scene of a movie: I remember watching one where the guy is sitting in the car across the street from the house smoking his cigarette; must have taken them an hour for a 5-second sequence! The only regret is that we didn't rent our driveway to them... our neighbor did and got paid something like $50 / week. Oh, and of course our house appears in one scene; that must be worth something, no? ;-) Well, we did get a copy on video....

Elizabeth's stories...
I first met Stefanie Powers in October 1992. I was 18 and had been a "fan" for 6 years. Stefanie was in Toronto filming the movie Survive the Night and her fan club told me how to contact her. I had been on Cloud 9 the whole week just knowing she was in town, and I was excited that I might be able to meet her. Friday afternoon I called her hotel and asked if we might meet for a few minutes. She said I could come over that afternoon - in 20 minutes. I was so nervous!!! I was about to meet Stefanie Powers - the lady I had first seen as Jennifer Hart, the multi-faceted person I had learned about as I clipped articles for 6 years!

My (wonderful) mom drove me, my brother and my friend through rush hour traffic, on a Friday afternoon, the night of the Blue Jays Playoffs (talk about a traffic nightmare). (It takes half an hour to drive downtown on a good day.) I arrived LATE!!! Ahhhh... Can you believe it? What a first impression I made. She's so gracious to let me meet with her, and I can't even make it on time! Yikes. Anyway....

I went to her hotel (Hotel Intercontinental) and up up up to her room (626). This was it! Knock knock knock.

Stefanie herself answered the door. (Breathe Elizabeth!) WOW! She invited us in and we sat in the living area of the room. The room was very tidy, and a classical (?) radio station was playing quietly in the background. Stefanie wore tan brown pants, and a dark blue/teal long sleeved top. We sat and I showed her my scrapbooks I collected. She commented on some of the contents:
"I remember it was cold that night!" pointing to a pic of her dressed as Maggie Lunel (Mistral's Daugher) in the fruit bowl costume by the fountain.

"My mom really did say that," referring to a magazine article titled "My mom wants me to have a baby".

Of course she said lots of other things - my head was spinning. I can't remember everything. I think she mentioned that one of her favourite Hart to Hart episodes was the one where they met in London.

She posed for some photos with me. Then we left ... knowing we'd see her again in a few hours when she taped The Shirley Show that night.

Stefanie and Elizabeth

There were 2 shows being taped and Stefanie's was the second. We got great seats and thoroughly enjoyed the show. Who wouldn't be thrilled with a full hour devoted to Stefanie?

The next time I had the opportunity to meet her was when she and Robert Wagner came to Toronto in February 1993 with the play Love Letters. I was able to go backstage after the show with my brother, friend and Grandma and meet the two of them. We didn't talk much... too many people around (not to mention the lineup of people outside waiting to see them!). Here are some photos.
