CBC Radio Lives!

By Elizabeth Keys

Author's Note: This is an essay I did for my English 1201 class (apparently, my incompetent teacher was bored and decided to pass out the most creative assignment she could think of) on 2002-10-12 in a span of three hours while munching on Mr. Noodles. It deals with a very simple topic and yes, is simple in structure. However, I have a tendency to babble on, and this time the limit was 350 words, so "CBC Radio Lives!" is basically my experiment in succinctness. Tell me if it's any good.

SOME PEOPLE SAY that CBC Radio is boring. Some say that CBC Radio has no future. However, I know better. CBC Radio One will be the foremost information source in my life for years to come. Whenever I switch on the radio 640 AM, it is indubitable that I will get programming that is relevant to topics Canadians like myself feel are important, and intelligent and diverse enough to develop my mind. CBC Radio is a glorious dash of wisdom in a decidedly confused world.

Firstly, CBC Radio is an information station that connects me to news that matters to Canadians. For example, As It Happens, hosted by Mary Lou Finlay and Barbara Budd, discusses significant current issues like the state of the Canadian dollar and whether or not human cloning is ethical. As a citizen of one of the most powerful countries in the world, it is important to be aware of such social and economic topics. CBC Radio gives me the opportunity to be always in the know--whenever, wherever.

In addition, as opposed to stations featuring mind-numbing heavy metal music and mundane gossip from Hollywood, CBC Radio One showcases a broad variety of intelligent information. For instance, every time I need to know the news, the in-depth updates every hour sate my thirst. When Im in the mood to learn a bit about science, I can turn to Quirks and Quarks, the Saturday show with Bob MacDonald on the latest in science, technology, and medicine. The buzz on arts and culture can be found as well, saturating shows like This Morning hosted by Shelagh Rogers and Definitely Not The Opera with Sook-Yin Lee. CBC Radio complements my love for learning and elevates my knowledge to new and exciting levels.

To conclude, CBC Radio is not a cure for insomnia; rather, it is a daily dose of intelligence that keeps me informed and alert. I will be a loyal listener of 640 AM from now to when Im old and in need a hearing aid to understand the powerful words being emitted from my radio. Vive le CBC!
