Although he lost his wife in 1901, Major Slaton lived to see much of the fruits of success in his children. His oldest son, William Martin Slaton, succeeded his father as Superintendent of Schools in Atlanta. His younger son, John Marshall Slaton, became the Governor of Georgia in 1911. Governor Slaton's story of courage in commuting the sentence of an innocent man was written about by John F. Kennedy in his Profiles in Courage (and later was portrayed by Jack Lemmon in the movie "The Murder of Mary Phagan.") His daughter Martha Lee Slaton, an Atlanta French professor, was educated at the Sorbonne, Wellesley College, Columbia University, and Middlebury. She was honored by the French Government in 1935, awarded Palms Academiques, and named "Officier d'Academie." Another daughter married a Justice of the Supreme Court for Georgia.
