| Soon after his 29th birthday, John married sixteen-year-old Nancy Ann Harris. Nancy was born 10/24/1824 in Hancock County, Georgia, the oldest of six children of distant cousins Henry Harris and Mary Harris. Nancy was born 11/2/1807 in Shoulderbone Creek, Hancock County, Georgia. Nancy was an eighth-generation American Harris, descending from Jamestown, Virginia founders and from Sir William Harris of Crixey, England. | |||||||||||||||

| The Harrises of Virginia and Georgia numbered among their descendants many members of government, from Virginia's House of Burgesses to several state governors in the 19th and 20th centuries. Nancy and John themselves were the grandparents of a governor of Georgia, John Marshall Slaton, while Nancy's sister Elizabeth was the grandmother of Governor Luther Hall of Louisiana. | |||||||||||||||
