| Journal: What is the difference between free will and fate? Is man's existence determined by fate, or does he have free will? Explain.
Free will is the ability to make choices, decisions and solve problems on your own, while fate is where everything is predetermined for you. It is hard to say on whether or not man has free will or fate. What is perceived as a choice made by ones own free will could very likely have been planned all along, a part of a divine beings infinite plan for that individual. I believe that free will can exist in small quantities. Decisions that could change your life forever are an example of these small quantities. Something so simple as letting (or not letting) a designated driver drive your car home for you instead of you yourself going behind the wheel can have almost no impact whatsoever, or it could change your life (or even end it) forever. By making the choice of your own free will to allow the designated driver to get behind the wheel, instead of you yourself, you greatly decrease the risk of hitting another vehicle and getting involved in a car accident, in contrast, by making the choice of not letting the designated driver get behind the wheel and attempting to drive yourself home, you risk getting into a car accident (ranging from a fender bender to a full on smoking carcass of a car) or being pulled over by a police officer, put through one or more series of sobriety tests and possibly be put in jail for one or more nights and have your car impounded. When you pass on to heaven (or the next life, whichever religion you choose to believe in) you could find out from your deity that every move, every decision, every choice that you had ever made had already been moved, decided and chosen for you, even before you had been presented with the problem that such actions were required for, in your life. |
