Chicks Dig the Long Ball

June 15th, 2006

True so True, chicks certainly do dig the long ball. A line made famous by a Nike ad campaign featuring Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux. They spent hours in the weight room bulking up because the chicks didn't dig the ground out or the called strike three, they digged the long ball.

Well if thats the case then said "chicks" should be clamouring over the EBL's top 3 homerun hitters so far this season. Derek Lee of the Erie Seawolves leads the way with a whopping 29 HR's in 57 games. Chasing him is a pair of New York Mets, Tony Clark with 26 HR's and Manny Ramirez with 22 HR's.

Derek Lee in fact is currently leading the entire EBL in batting average .376 and in RBI's with 72. "Derek has put up some monstrous numbers for us so far this season" explained Seawolves GM Bill Dod, "we just hope he can stay healthy and keep on doing what he's doing."

"Being in a homerun friendly park doesn't hurt" added Lee, "but I'm seeing the ball well and taking advantage of the mistakes pitchers make."

Three homeruns behind Lee is the aging veteran, Tony Clark of the New York Metropolitans. At 33 most think his power days are behind him, well somebody tell Tony, 26 HR's and counting. "He's been a pleasant surprise for us" beems Mets GM Martin McGrath, "we knew he could come in and proide some leadership and be a threat at the plate, but we never thought he'd be this much of a threat!"

"I cork all my bats!" joked Clark, "don't quote me on that, now they'll be confiscating my bats! But seriously I feel good at the plate and when I get good wood on the ball it just seems to leave the park."

Chasing them both is Tony's teammate Manny Ramirez with a modest 22 long balls of his own. "Its Manny being Manny!" explained McGrath, "sure Manny makes some odd decisions in the outfield, but the guys love him and when it comes to hitting the dude can just mash with the best of them!"

"We make a pretty good one-two punch" claims Ramirez, "playing in New York is alot of fun and I'm doing my best to help us win the division."

The NL West is a dog-fight of a division, despite all the power neither Erie nor New York are sitting in first place. Only time will tell if first place "digs the long ball".

Derek Lee is on pace to hit an impressive 82 HR's.

Manny being Manny, 22 HR's so far this year.

Tony your a tiger with a GRRREAT 26 HR's this season.
