The Lincoln Railsplitters are perhaps one of the youngest teams ever assembled. But a current 16-game losing streak may have management rethinking their love of the rookie.
Don't trust anyone over 30 seems to be the company line in Lincoln with only 3 players of their 40 man roster over the age of 30. Chad Moeller at 30, Juan Castro at 33, and Carl Everett at 34 being the teams eldest member. "I feel like I've got about 20 kids on this squad!" says Everett, "sometimes I feel like an extra coach out there."
The Railsplitters have an average age of 24.2 years for their 40-man roster. But with all that youth, alot of it unproven, winning is going to be tough. As exciting as youngsters can be on the field, the mistakes are plenty and learning as you go in the majors can be tough. With a team ERA of 6.54 through 33 games combined with the fact that Lincoln is in the bottom 3 of the EBL in runs scored, is a recipe for alot of losses to pile up, and quick.
"It's a time for us to learn" says 2nd baseman Jorge Cantu, "sure we'd like to win more but all this losing is going to make us stronger in the future."
Perhaps Cantu is right, but so far attendance has fallen to dismall numbers, and the end seems to be no where in sight. And as funny as it sounds there are rumours that Carl Everett could be had for some prospects or draft picks.
"We are committed to our youth movement" GM Stan Skawinski confidently states, "we have an abundance of youthfull talent and give us 2 to 3 seasons to mature a little and trust me you won't want to face us often."
Time will only tell us the answer to this one.
