Part 1: THE BASICS Yeah, yeah, really cool all those tutorials about how to design your dream map. Unfortantely most of the time you end up with two small room and if you are lucky you will even have a door. :-) But how do you make a level that you and your friend like to play and a level you can actually put on our site??
First let us be you guide: Before building a level make up what kind of level you are going to make: a deathmatch map, a singleplayer map, a Capture the Flag map,...That simple choice make a hell of a difference in the lay out of your map. It is also good to know which theme you are going to use: futuristic, gothic, old,... It is also good to draw a template on a piece of paper this seems stupid when to pro's also do it. If you are satisfied with your template then it is time to start the editor.

1. DEATHMATCH LEVELS Deathmatch levels are almost always smaller then singleplayer maps because you don't want to spend hours looking for each other do you? It is also very important to make the map equal for each player That means don't give one player all the best weapons from the beginning and the other player the weakiest weapons from the beginning.Also a cool idea is to put monsters in your map. It is almost never done in deathmatch games but it is possible to let a monster stand guard next to the most powerfull weapon in the game.And don't forget to give a room 2 exits because this will reduce camong a lot.

Ok the next point is that you will have to test your map on speed. Because really deatailed and pretty level can reduce the frames per second severely.
2. SINGLEPLAYER MAPS Forget all what we have said for deathmatch levels. Because for this levels you need a story to make them attractive. They also have to be really big so you don't play it out in 10 minutes. So grab a piece of paper and design your story and then afterwards build a map based on the story. Just play any 3d shooter in singleplayer and you wil know what I mean. |
