Sinn Fein
Established in 1905, its name is translated into English as "We Ourselves". In 1918 it won the general election with an overwhelming majority and established the Dail Eireann. In 1922, after the war of Independance, the party split over the Treaty negotiations and subsequent division of Ireland into a British-held 6 county state and an Irish Free State.
In the 1980's it re-emerged and re-organised into a political party. The result of contesting elections in the North was a split which resluted in the formation of Republican Sinn Fein.
It is currently the largest Republican party in the North.
