Eyewitness to History

This is by far my favorite website on all of World War One and most possibly my favorite history site I have ever seen. The main part of this site provides eyewitness reports to different important events of the different periods in time. This site contains eyewitness reports to different times such as both world wars, the ancient world, the middle ages and renaissance, and the different centuries leading up to present day. In the page made for World War One there are many fascinating eyewitness reports that have truly intrigued me such as the many assassinations and murders of the time. The assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand is well known to be one of the main reasons for World War One starting and the eyewitness report on his assassination brings a lot of insight that I had never thought of before.  The page also provides the reader with pictures of the fateful day of his death and these pictures were quite fascinating. This page gives you the information in a couple different perspectives which is always a good way of learning when you look at a moment in history from different standpoints. I believe this site is very credible and if you ever want a great site to view I highly suggest this one.

World War I

I believe that this site is a great one because it provides you with links to many sites on every aspect of the First World War. It is also set out in an interesting format. The site is in paragraphs talking about the war and giving different interesting facts and information on the war. Then along throughout the paragraphs different important words are highlighted and these highlighted words are links to other pages. The words that are highlighted are things like names of particular battles or people, also there are many pages on interesting things such as recollections of the war and panoramas of trench life. This site really brings pictures to mind that help to make the war more personal and real to the present day person. The different paragraphs are also separated into different sections such as The Great War, Campaigns and Battles, The World at War, The Social Impact of War, Debates, and World War One in Context, Your History, The War in Headlines, and the History Trail. There is even a page for children titled World War I: Curriculum Bites. One of my particular favorites of the smaller pages would have to be the page on the First Shot. I learned that the first shot of World War I took place on August 22 1914 near a small Belgium village.

World War I trenches on The Web

In my opinion this site is an exceptionally good one. It provides the reader with fascinating information on World War I and the warfare of this time. One thing on the site that I really enjoyed was this quote from Max Plowman from Subaltern on the Somme. "Facts are mere accessories to the truth, and we do not invite to our hearth the guest who can only remind us that on such a day we suffered calamity. Still less welcome is he who would make a Roman holiday of our misfortunes. Exaggeration of what was monstrous is quickly recognised as a sign of egotism, and that contrarious symptom of the same disease which pretends that what is accepted as monstrous was really little more than normal is equally unwelcome." I believed this was a good quote that showed some of what this time was like for the people. It also added a nice touch to the decoration of the site. Another great part of this site is the tours it provides for people who are in a hurry and need information fast. I think this is a good aide to have and it was very convenient. This site was defiantly credible and used great resources to provide some fascinating information for the people.
