These pages are
all different glimpses of the Korean and Vietnam
wars. They all show different sides and different view points on the war. It is
interesting to see different views on these wars because you can then gather
the information and make you own opinion about the war. Although these wars
were both very different they also have many similarities. Both wars were
fought over land, power, and resources. Also, in both wars there were power
hungry leaders striving to get even more power.
The division of Korea
into two parts dates from the end of World War II. Prior to
that time, since around 1910, it had been a colony of Japan,
though the Korean people continually worked to regain their freedom.
Their dream finally came within reach when the Allied powers of World War II
pledged independence, though they failed to specify the details effecting the
establishment of a government. The war was between the U.S.
army and the North Korean army over who would have control of Korea.
The U.S. was
helping out South Korea
because of their belief in a containment policy. North
Korea was communist and so the U.S.
was trying to prevent communism from being spread.
After WWII
the French chose to fight the independence of the colonies which they had
captured. This was the most famous battle for control of a colony and it was
the Vietnam War. Vietnam
had iron and coal mines in the north, rubber plantations and rice fields in the
south. The French desired to keep these valuable natural resources, and,
consequently, they would not let Vietnam
become independent. The Vietminh, a communist group led by Ho Chi Minh, led the
nationalist movement in Vietnam.
The Vietminh had control of the Vietnamese countryside and he used hit and run
tactics to bottle the French up in cities and a few strongholds. Unlike the
Korean War this war was more for natural resources then power.
