*Journal- Reasons why Europe was on the brink of war. Look at ch. 27 Sec. 1 and write 4 general reasons why Europe was on the brink of war in the early 1900s. Do these same conditions continue to cause international tension today?

1)      Imperialist and economic rivalries among European powers

2)      European alliance system

3)      Militarism and arms race

4)      Nationalist tensions in Balkans

I believe that these same conditions still cause internationals tension today. Our country is always at rivalry with other countries for imperialist and economic issues. Everyone wants to gain more land and money for the sole purpose of being the most powerful. Power is a very major thing today and this is one another main reason for imperialist tension today. Also alliances, although meant to do well and keep the peace, can also cause a lot of tension. When a country does not hold up to its agreement or is not trusted then their id mistrust in the alliance and bad things happen. Also there is a new type of militarism and arms race. During the time period before World War I every country was trying to become more advanced in their army, navy, or marines and trying to have more weapons. Although it is a different type of arms race now it is the same situation but even more dangerous. Right now every country is in a race to have more nuclear weapons so that they can feel safe from everyone else. It is evident that the same things are causing problems today and so it seems that a war of greater size and importance could be coming soon.
