Rise of Napoleon

Before Napoleon had power, no one respected him at all. He had no social status and had

no friends. When his opportunity came he showed everyone what logic and military skill

he had. Even though Napoleon was gone for much of the time, he wrote his wife

Josephine letters everyday. Even she had no respect for him, and did not love him. She

eventually cheated on him with an army officer. Napoleon, however, did earn the respect

from his soldiers because of his charisma. He mastered building up the courage of his

soldiers and led them into every battle. Because his troops were so enthusiastic when they

came into battle, there were no tactics; they surprised their enemies with their fury and

made them flee. Napoleon believed that it was his destiny that he would achieve great

things. “Great men become great because they have learned how to master luck” – this is

what Napoleon said about his power and what he one day wanted to be. Napoleon

ordered paintings after a victory and created his own history through his paintings that

exalted him. Even though he won many battles and won the praise of many people in

cities in France, the people in Italy disliked him. Napoleon killed anyone who rebelled;

people stopped thinking of him as a person who fought for liberty. The most remarkable

thing that Napoleon did was to try and attack the Middle East.
