Second President of the
Third Republic of the Philippines
(Term: April 17, 1948 -
November 10, 1953)

 

Elpidio Quirino, Philippine President

  Elpidio Quirino (1890-1956), president of the Philippines (1948-1953). He was born in Vignan on Luzon, studied law, and later became secretary to the independence leader Manuel Quezon. A member of the House of Representatives (1919-1925) and the Senate (1928-1935), he helped draft the constitution for the Philippine Commonwealth, subsequently served in Quezon's government, and fought in the resistance against the Japanese. He was elected vice president of the independent Philippines in 1946. He succeeded to the presidency upon Manuel Roxas's death in 1948 and won a full term in 1949. In the 1953 elections he lost to Ramón Magsaysay.
