Guimaras

   

Location and boundaries

  • Guimaras is part of the Panay group of islands. It lies southeast of Panay Island and northwest of Negros Island.
  • Surrounding the main island are the islets of Inampulugan, Tando, Nadulao, Panobolon, Natunga, Nagarao, Naburot, Guiwanon, and a few others.
  • Guimaras is bordered by the Iloilo Strait on the north, northeast, separating the province from Iloilo City by 1.5 nautical miles. On the south, southwest is the Panay Gulf, separating the province from Negros Occidental by about 6 nautical miles.

  • Punta Blanco Target Range and Camp Jossman are military installations constructed by the U.S. Army in 1903, where Gen McArthur stayed while on duty on the island.
  • Church of St. Isidore is the oldest Catholic Church in Guimaras, established by the Spanish priests in 1885.
  • Roca Encantada is a summerhouse sitting on the boulder by the sea. Across the rock house are the islets of the Seven Sins or Siete Picados, which according to the Legend were the seven disobedient virgins cursed by their parents.
  • Built in 1772 by the Cistercian monks, the Trappist Monastery is now an abbey and a favorite retreat venue.
  • Costa Aguada is a 1,067-hectare eco-tourism resort located in the Inampulugan Island.
