Slovenský raj National Park

Národný Park Slovenský raj

My Peace Corps assignment sent me to work with the administration of this beautiful park. The park is mostly limestone karst, which forms the major waterfalls that the park is famous for. The major forest types are beech-fir forests, spruce-fir forests, and pine forests. A variety of animals live in the park including brown bear, wolves, lynx, golden and spotted eagles, exotic chamois, otter, capercaille, red deer, and more. There are also many rare flowering plants and rich meadows.

Climbing the waterfalls Liezť vodopady

One day my friends Aneta (pink shirt) and Tonja (white shirt) agreed to go hiking with me. They ask me to pick a route that would not have too many people or to high a waterfall. So we hiked up Piecky Gorge, and its medium sized waterfall. The girls ad no trouble climbing the ladder once they got over their initial fears.

Jeden deň kamratky Anéta a Tónja rozhodili isť s mnou na turú. Povedali turá nemala isť hori velým vodopadom tak išili sme cez Piecky a jeho taký stredný vodopad. Žený nemali problem s reblikom keď sa prestáli trapiť a šli.

 Bats Netopiery

How could I put up a web page with Slovensky raj and not have something about bats? Due to the same geological processes that formed the waterfalls over 300 caves where formed in Slovensky raj. These caves make great homes for bats! One of the most enjoyable projects I got to work on was doing bat surveys and exploring the otherwise closed Stratinska Cave. This mouse-eared bat (M. myotis) is one of the more common bats found at that cave. My work with bats earned me the nickname "Batman" among friends in Spisska.

Zdravim kamratom v SNV - Batman.

Spišská Nová Ves

I took this picture of Spišská Nová Ves from a hill at the edge of the park. Both apartments I lived in are just to the left and behind the tall church tower (the tallest church tower in Slovakia). My buildings were too small to be visible from this picture. It is a great town to live in. Everything is within walking distance.

Táto fotka SNV je za meďvedej hlavy. Už ostatný veci o SNV viete tak pisať nebudem.

Jewish Cemetery Židoský Cintorin

Many of my friends and family in the states read about the work that I was involved in restoring a Jewish cemetery. The country of Slovakia has many old Jewish cemeteries. Shortly after I arrived in the country some friends took me to see a castle in Western Slovakia. I remember being surprised and disturbed by the old Jewish cemetery in shambles at the gates to the castle. Tomas Repciak (center with glasses) convinced me to work on a restoration project with him. We did manage to fix some grave stones, get the trash out of the cemetery, get the grass cut, and raise a lot of awareness. The project has slowed down, largely do to political barriers, but has been taken over by a high school history teacher.

Po Slovenský este pride.

In the future I will post more pictures from Spisska Nova Ves. V budecnosťi dam viac fotky y SNV.

The Tatras Tatry

When you opened to my homepage you saw a panoramic of the High Tatra Mountains. Often I could see a similar view from my balcony or kitchen window. These mountains were about 30 miles from where I lived, and became very important to me. It did not take long before I need a break from Slovensky raj National Park, so often when I just felt like going hiking I went to the Tatras instead. The Tatra Mountains are the shortest alpine mountains in the world, and are home the Tatra subspecies of the chamois. Although the Tatras get crowded in the summer months with tourist there are still areas to go that make for a relaxing hike. I will post more Tatra pictures in the future

Keď ste otvorili homepage, videli ste Výsoký Tatry. Často som mal podobný pohlad z býtu. Tatry mi boli doléžitý lebo dali možnosť byť vonku mimo Slovenského raj (a prácy).

Bratislava

All in all there is not much to stare at in Bratislava accept for women in skirts, like Cumil. The city is getting nicer, and I saw a great improvement during my time in Slovakia. However, I still think the eastern part of the country is nicer.

Viac mený neni veľa kukať v Blavé okreme baby v suknach ako Čumil. Ale Blavá je lepšie a lepšie a je mnohá krát lepšie teraz ako keď som bol tam prvý krát. Podľa mna vychod stale je krašie.
