Homeschooling Help
I am starting this page to help people who have questions about teaching. I have recently retired from teaching and have watched the public school system go from something that focues on children learning to something that focuses on keeping administrative jobs.
The biggerst problem that I see is that people take their kids out of the school system because the school system is not working, but then they use the same methods to try to teach their children at home.
Textbooks
One of the biggest problem with the school system is textbooks. The problem is that they are based on grade level. If your child is above or below grade level, they are going to have problems with the textbook. This is probably the major reason for discipline problems in the school system. I taught in the alternative school system for three years and I had very few problems since I only used the textbook for reference. If you are going to use textbooks, use the textbook that fits your child's level, not their grade. In my classes, I had students working in college math textbooks and I had students working in third grade reading texts. I taught grades 6-8.
Science
I used hands on Scinece experiments as the basis of my teaching. I always had things growing in the classroom. Homework consisted of oberservations they made on their way home each day. I used Science to create interest in Reading, Writing, Math, and Social Studies.
Reading and Writing
I had a very simple way of teaching Reading and Writing and Grammar. I started out by having students come up with either nouns or verbs and making a list of at least 10. When they has a list of 10 of each, they put them together to make very simple sentences. Then we added adjectives, adverbs, and prepositonal phrases one at a time, showing them what each element added to the sentence.
Some students were done in a few weeks and some were still working on adding things at the end of the semester, but they were all learning. I also added a new word everyday to thier vocabulary.
My Two Cents
Education is becoming a thing in the past in this country. I know No Child Left Behind sounds like a good idea. The problem is that school districts are looking for new ways to cheat on achievement tests so they can show progress that is not there. The focus has become the test and not the student.
