Ancestors of Charles Stephen DeFrance (Direct Biddle Line)
John Biddle was my 6th great grandfather. He was born about 1661 at Norton Regis, England.
He married Mary Jones. The book "Complete Book of Emigrants 1669-1699" lists "Oxford Circuit
prisoners reprieved to be transported to America ..... Worchester; John Biddle of Norton Regis".
John died in 1734 at St. Stephens Parish, Cecil County, MD. John and Mary had the following
children: Thomas, John, Jaine, Samuel, Sarah, Benjamine and William Richard.
Thomas Biddle was born about 1696 at St. Stephens Parish, Cecil Co., MD. He married Elizabeth
Boulding in 1716-1717. Thomas died in 1773. They had the following children: William, Rachel,
Noble, Thomas, Mary and Sarah.
Noble Biddle was born in 1725 at Cecil County, MD. He married Mary (Last name not known).
Noble died before 1796 at Cecil County, MD. They had the following children: Spencer,
Andrew, Sarah, Levy, Raymond, Boulden, Elizabeth, Mary, Samuel, Stephen and Tamar.
Spencer Biddle was born about 1745 in MD. He married Sarah Pearce in 1778. He was a miller
and owned a flour mill near the head of Sassafras River. He moved to Marshall County, WV
about 1799 where he bought 800 acres on Big Grave Creek for $800. The 1790 census shows him
owning two slaves. Spencer died about 1835 in VA. Children: Juby, Rebecca, spencer, Robert,
Reason, George and Lloyd.
Lloyd Biddle was born 1791 in MD. He married Frances Wykert about 1796. Lloyd died in 1876
at Pleasents County, WV. Children: Francina, Theodore Perry, Hannah, Agustus, Reason,
Susan, Robert, Sarah Sophia, Samuel, Elizabeth, Frances.
Theodore Perry Biddle was born in 1816 in VA (WV). He married Mariah Willis of Greene Co., PA in 1840. They moved to New Matamoras, Washington Co., OH. In 1861 he enlisted in Co. I of the 77th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a private. He wanted to be in the same unit as his son, Lloyd, so he could protect him. They were in the "Battle of Shiloh" in TN. On December 14, 1863 he died of Cholera in the Army Garrison at Little Rock, AR. His son, Lloyd, was with him when he died. Lloyd served in the same Company and was captured and sent to a POW camp in Texas. He was released at the end of the Civil War. Perry and Mariah had the
following children: Amanda, Lloyd Abelbert, John Quincy, Margaret Frances, Ella, Grace Eveline and Diana Josephine.
Grace Biddle was born in 1857 in Ludlow Twp., Washington Co., OH. She married Tolbert Fenning Johnson in 1881 at Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV. Children: Junius Weir, and Twins Beulah Mariah and Beryl Ella.
Beulah Mariah Johnson was born in 1893 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV. She married Charles Hoon DeFrance in 1923 at Wheeling. They lived on the old Charles DeFrance/Hester Meloy farm 2 miles west of Claysville, Washington Co., PA. They had a son who died at birth, Charles Reese. The other son is Charles Tolbert.
Charles Tolbert DeFrance was born 30 Jul 1934 at Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV. He married Daisy
Cascante-Mora on 12 May 1973 at San Jose, Costa Rica. They have the following children:
Charles Stephen and Jacelyn Dyann.
Charles Stephen (Steve) DeFrance was born on 16 Jun 1974 in DeLand, FL. Steve graduated from
The Citadel in Charleston, SC and now works in Washington, DC where he is attending George
Washington University working on his Masters degree in Forensic Science.
