Disclaimer: This is a fantasy, and it's not intended to harm anyone directly or indirectly. It's only meant for entertainment and enjoyment purposes, and I'm not profiting from this, only pacifying my muses. The lyrics borrowed in this piece are all property of Janne Da Arc and their translators are credited at the end.
Comments: This is what happens when an English student has over-active muses. This time, not only am I throwing reality out the window, but convention and genre too. This is a rather abstract, experimental piece, solely inspired by Dorothy Porter's book, Wild Surmise.
FREEDOM
By Regina Wren
The air in Tokyo is heavy.
It hangs like a curtain outside my window.
But there are still a few brave birds
that fly in this choked sky.
Strong arms slip around my waist from behind.
"Yasu," he murmurs in my ear.
Looking for your own story, you'll take off to a place not on the map...
Things have been
crazy for us -
Janne Da Arc -
lately:
practice
interviews
writing
recording
performing
When we started
I pushed the other guys,
probably more than anyone.
I wanted to take the band
as far as we could go:
to the top:
of the charts,
of the world.
There were people who told me
it would never happen;
when our band broke up
for a while
I almost believed them.
And when we spent years
trying to break into the industry
without success
the walls seemed just too high.
I want to fly so high that I can catch that rainbow...
Ka-yu's hands
are calloused
but I love
the way they feel
on my body
and on my bare skin.
I reach out
to pull him down
on top of me,
pressing my lips
to his mouth.
If I were a woman
we would be able
to tell the world
about this.
I feel him sink
inside me,
and we melt together.
We move together...
closer...
and breathe
as one...
If you can't find paradise, just make it now.
Won't you let me do what I want, to live my life in complete joy...
Sunday,
and for once
we have some time off.
To anyone else
we are only two friends
out for a ride
on a motorbike,
faceless
beneath our helmets.
My legs press
against Ka-yu's thighs,
but I resist
holding onto him
and keep my fingers
wrapped around the bar
on the seat, behind me.
Leaving the city
we stop at a traffic light,
pulling up beside a car
full of students.
The window is down
and I can just hear
the radio from inside.
It's playing one of our songs.
I tap Ka-yu's back
and he nods, indicating
he's heard it too.
Out here the air is clearer.
The sun is warm on my back
and the wind is cold
as it whips past us.
Ka-yu turns the bike
towards the ocean
as the road rushes
below us.
Seagulls circle
above the cliffs,
and beyond that
is only the ocean
and the sky.
If this weren't
such a busy road
I could almost imagine us
alone out here.
Take you to a place with a better view than we have now...
Light and sound fills the hall.
Our instruments combined
in song,
like we always are.
You's head is bowed
his fingers dancing
on the strings,
his eyes intent.
The trill of his guitar
soars across the music.
There is a small smile
on Kiyo's face
as he gazes at the crowd.
His fingers are short
but skilled,
caressing the keys.
Shuji beats away
at the drums,
apparently never getting tired.
And Ka-yu standing next to me,
sweat glistens on his neck,
his hair tangled already,
fingers constantly moving
on the strings.
My cue comes
and I raise my microphone.
Up here is our dream come true.
Thousands of hands
are raised in the audience,
like a giant wave,
swelling and falling.
Ka-yu catches my eye and grins,
his smile telling me
everything I feel,
he does too.
I give him enough time
to back off if he wants,
but he lets me
slip my arm
around his shoulders,
and when I lean over
he turns to meet my lips.
We only kiss briefly,
but the crowd goes wild.
Up here it doesn't matter -
I can be what I want,
because the show is just
for the fans, right?
It's not real
Is it?
But on stage
I can live the music.
I feel alive.
I can be honest
and real.
And I can sing out loud;
I can sing about
what it means to me
to stand here.
I don't know
if they understand,
but if only I can teach them
to feel what I do
and take them all with me
for a little while,
out of their lives.
Then we can fly together
across
the
stage
through the hall
beyond the walls
into
the
sky
