The strongest must seek a way, say you? But I say: let a ploughman plough, but choose an otter for swimming, and for running light over grass
and leaf, or over snow - an Elf.
(....he sprang forth nimbly....the Elf had no boots, but wore only light shoes, as he always did, and his feet made little imprint in the snow.)
Farewell! I go to find the sun!
(....swift as a runner over firm sand he shot away...)
Pg 383 "The Fellowship of the Ring" Book Two, Chapter III: The Ring Goes South

I do not wish to go to Moria.
Pg 390 "The Fellowship of the Ring" Book Two, Chapter IV: A Journey in the Dark

Ai! ai! A Balrog! A Balrog is come!
--- Legolas wails in the books, movie-Legolas is too suave to wail when danger is afoot: he just lifts his bow and prepares to battle.
Pg 432 "The Fellowship of the Ring" Book Two, Chapter V: The Bridge of Khazad-Dum

There lie the woods of Lothlorien! That is the fairest of all the dwellings of my people. There are no trees like the trees of that land. For in the autumn
their leaves fall not, but turn to gold. Not till the spring comes and the new green opens do they fall, and then the boughs are laden with yellow flowers,
and the floor of the wood is golden, and golden is the roof, and its pillars are of silver, for the bark of the trees is smooth and grey. So still our songs in
Mirkwood say. My heart would be glad if I were beneath the eaves of that wood, and it were springtime!
Pg 438 "The Fellowship of the Ring" Book Two, Chapter VI: Lothlorien

I am sorry, Frodo! So much has happened this day and we have such need of haste, that I have forgotten that you were hurt, Sam too. You should
have spoken. We have done nothing to ease you, as we ought, though all the orcs or Moria were after us. Come now! A little further on there is a
place where we can rest for a little. There I will do what I can for you. Come, Boromir! We will carry them.
--- Legolas shows his concerns as in the next quote. Legolas is very considerate of others.
Pg 439 "The Fellowship of the Ring" Book Two, Chapter VI: Lothlorien

Lothlorien! Lothlorien! We have come to the eaves of the Golden wood. Alas that is is winter!
--- Legolas makes many exclamations in the books when he sees something he admires. In Peter Jackson's FoTR, Legolas is seen wondering around
Lorien silently absorbing the beauty and splendor.
Pg 442 "The Fellowship of the Ring" Book Two, Chapter VI: Lothlorien

I will climb up, I am at home among trees by root or bough.............but I have never climbed in one. I will see now what is their shape and way of growth.
(Legolas springs lightly from the ground and grabs an overhead branch and, upon hearing a commanding voice call, drops back down in surprise and fear
and shrinks against the bole of the tree.)
--- very different from the Legolas pressented in the recent "Lord of the Rings" movie who is confident and calm.
Pg 447 "The Fellowship of the Ring" Book Two, Chapter VI: Lothlorien

I can walk this path, but the others have not this skill. Must they swim?
Pg 454 "The Fellowship of the Ring" Book Two, Chapter VI: Lothlorien

A plague on Dwarves and their stiff necks!
(- after Gimli angrily refuses to be blindfolded on the way to Lothlorien which results in the whole Fellowship having to be blindfolded along with him.)
Alas for the folly of these days! Here are the enemies of the one Enemy, and yet I must walk blind, while the sun is merry in the woodland under the
leaves of gold!
Pg 455-456 "The Fellowship of the Ring" Book Two, Chapter VI: Lothlorien

Yrch!
(Legolas says falling into his own tongue -- orcs were attacking the company with arrows)
I was wrong about that, Legolas was not wailing. "Yrch" is the Sindarin word for "Orc". Thanks to Bettina Kamann for correcting me!
Pg 507 "The Fellowship of the Ring" Book Two, Chapter IX: The Great River

He stands not alone. You would die before your stroke fell.
--- In Gimli's defence.
Pg 31 "The Two Towers" Book Three, Chapter II: The Riders of Rohan
