Sunday, November 2, 2003 - Pro-Tour Qualifier: Amsterdam. Ok, a little background story first. On Saturday, I had a meeting at 9:30 am. What?!! What has that got to do with Magic?. Patience. Unfortunately I woke up for the meeting at 9:47 am, which created the very real fear that I might wake up late for the PTQ on Sunday. So I set an alarm on my phone to wake me up at 8:45 am for the 10 am tournament in Subang. Good thing too because I woke up at 9 am thanks to the alarm.
I was playing a white-red deck. Here's my deck.

Rares are at the end of the page
Round 1: Tommy Cheaw Chung Sung
He was playing a white-blue deck. I started with a hand with some lands and some equipment, but no creatures. I decided to hope for the best. I laid down 3 equipment before I finally got a creature. I proceeded to equip Spikeshot Goblin with Scythe of the Wretched (go down and read this card). That combo is a guaranteed win, unless the opponent stops it. He didn't. His life: 20-16-12-concede. My life: 20-19-18-17-15.
Second game he sideboarded to include red. I guess he was frightened by my equipment/creature and wanted to kill them. But he didn't get enough lands and I quickly pummelled him to the ground. His life: 20-18-11-7-concede. My life: 20-19-18-17-16-14.
Score: Matches: 1-0/Games: 2-0. Rating: 1780
Round 2: Joo Yong Chin
I played him once last year when I was a relative newbie, and lost. I lost again. He was playing a white-blue-red deck. He got his stuff out, countered my Sword of Kaldra, put a Bonesplitter on a Skyhunter Patrol, and that was enough. His life: 20. My life: 20-19-15-8-4-concede (yes, it was a little late to concede).
Next game, I mana screwed. I was stuck at 2 lands and died shortly. His life: 20 (again). My life: 20-15-13-2-concede.
Score: Matches: 1-1/Games: 2-2. Rating: 1761
Round 3: Vincent Gan
He was playing white-red-green. This match went to three games. I won the first game thanks to a leonin scimitar on a spikeshot goblin. His life: 20-19-18-17-13-11-6-4-concede. My life: 20-13-11.
He won the second game thanks to a spikeshot goblin on his side. His life: 20-18-16. My life: 20-19-18-17-10-9-5-4-concede.
The last game lasted a long time. I had a scythe of the wretched and Isochron Scepter imprinted with razon barrier (protection from artifacts/chosen color). So I could easily attack, and I had sword of kaldra to make my creatures bigger. His creature would die and return with my scythe, then next turn I'd attack with that creature and another of his creatures would join my side. Time was called and I had 2 turns to win the game. He had 4 life and 3 creatures, I had 4 creatures. I had 10 life. If I attacked with everything, he would block wisely, take 2 damage, leaving him the opportunity to kill me next turn. Luckily I had Slith Firewalker (1/1 haste) in hand, so I played that, equipped it with sword of kaldra and attacked with 5 creatures. 2 unblocked to deal more than enough damage. His life: 20-19-18-17-16-12-4-dead. My life: 20-19-18-17-16-15-10.
Score: Matches: 2-1/Games: 4-3. Rating: 1783
Round 4: Nico Surindran
He played blue-red. I got a scythe of the wretched again. Just attacked, when he blocked, took his creature, and then repeat. His life: 20-19-17-12-2-concede. My life: 20-17.
It was Spikeshot Goblin and Leonin Scimitar yet again. His life: 20-18-15-13-10-7-5-3-dead. My life: 20-15-10-14 (life gain thanks to awe strike on a myr enforcer).
Matches: 3-1/Games: 6-3. Rating: 1799
Round 5: Saw Soon Kuan
Spikeshot Goblin+Leonin Scimitar. Nuff said. His life: 20-19-17-16-14-12-8-concede. My life: 20-19-18-15-14.
This time he put up some fight and got a Clockwork Dragon, but luckily by that time, he had only 5 life and I killed him with a Skyhunter Patrol that was constantly doing 2 damage and finally with a Mirror Golem imprinting an artifact creature (protection from artifacts and creatures). His life: 20-19-17-14-12-10-8-5-dead. My life: 20-18-16-12.
Matches: 4-1/Games: 8-3. Rating: 1811
Round 6: Nik
I could have made top 8 with a draw, but Nik needed a win so we played. He was playing black-red. He got the spikeshot goblin with a bonesplitter and won the first game with lodestone myr. I won the second game (don't remember how) and he won the third thanks to me being stuck on 3 lands). So I didn't make top 8. *sigh*
Matches: 4-2/Games: 9-5. Rating: 1794
