Old Sturbridge Village - Click on village tour- shows very good photos of buildings and life in the 18th century. Many activities for kids and the section called For Kids offers step by step instructions to making colonial crafts.

Abraham Lincoln - This site was created by a first grade class. It shows photos and simple text of Abe Lincoln's Boyhood National Memorial. Features a great photo gallery, an online quiz, animation of when each state joined the union, a treasure hunt and links to more Lincoln sites.

The First Thanksgiving - Offers a time line from 1620 - 1621, giving photos and text of the Pilgrims first year. Also shows life on board the Mayflower, life as a Pilgrim and the life of the Wamponoags. Text is above grade 1 but photos are great. Also offers excellent teacher resources.

Walking Tour of Plimoth Plantation - Show photos of Plimoth Plantation, children would click on a highlighted word and it shows a great photo of that subject. Text is above grade 1. Good teacher resource. Could be used as a lesson to be projected on a TV.

Colonial Kids - A simple explanation of Colonial Days presented by 11 year olds. Text is easy but above grade 1. Pictures are small but good. Great short videos of Colonial life.

 

States and Capitals - This site has all the facts for each state. Lists state bird, flower, song, capital, largest city, statehood date, outline map, etc. Also links to more info on specific items.

Explorers - Columbus - This site will bring up any explorer. It shows facts about that explorer and more links to explore about that person. It also offers geography crafts to go with the explorer.

Recycle City - This site provides games, facts, and activities about recycling. Visit Dumptown and Recycle City to play games and see how recycling can work.

Most of the land is desert covered with cactus. The main tribes that come from the Southwest area are the Apache, Hopi, Navajo, Pueblo, & Zuni. Some tribes spoke their own languages, had their own religious customs, and laws they followed.

Community Helpers - Excellent learning site for whole class activities or independent study. Sound files read the words to the children but first graders should have no problem reading most of it themselves. Many various types of Community workers with activities included with each worker, along with additional Internet sites for further study.

FBI Kids Page - This site offers a wide variety of information, some at grade level text, some text is above grade level. Information on jobs of the FBI, how they catch a criminal, child safety, gun safety, working dogs, and games. A field trip with the FBI dogs is very good.

Kids Next Door - Very good website for community workers. Many interactive matching and unscrambling words activities that go with jobs. There's a animated tour of parks and a site for kids to build a community.

Welcome To The City - This site takes the students on a tour of the city. It explores workers and their jobs, celebrations found in some cities and shopping and eating in a city. This site has very simple text - highlighted words show where they're located on a map.
