Power Inverter
This is the DC - AC oscillator. Basically it is a 555 timer circuit. The large metal power transistor mounted on a heatsink is the 2N3055. The potentiometer controls the frequency.
This is the large 100VA toroidal transfromer that increases the voltage to about 240v and charges the capacitor.
This is the whole setup showing the 12v lead acid battery, oscillator unit, toroidal transformer and capacitor. The crocodile clip is connected to the negative output of the capacitor and the discharge probe is connected to the positive. The capacitor shown in the picture is 470uF 250v and inverter charges it all the way up to 250v in about 3 seconds.

Have a look at my
Capacitor Discharge Experements with this circuit.
