Training Day - 2001 (R) Actors: Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Scott Glenn, Tom Berenger, Dr Dre Director: Antoine Fuqua Reviewed: 25 May 2005 If you've seen this movie, you don't need me to describe to you how amazing it is. I've seen it many times, and each time there are still those lines that make me grin at their pure badassness. Denzel Washington is a narc who is basically a criminal himself, and he is assigned to train Hawke on Hawke's first day on the job. For 24 hours Alonzo (Washington) and Hoyt (Hawke) go on a trip through south central LA, looking for big drug busts and the like. Washington is excellent as Alonzo, a ghetto-ified cop who crossed the line long ago. Hoyt is the rookie who is thrown into the underworld of corruption. The acting is fantastic, and the conversations are memorable. The ending, in particular, will stand in my memory for a long time. Even Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, AND Macy Gray being in it do the movie good, not harm. The world Fuqua takes us into is one most of us have probably never experienced, as Alonzo rolls into the Jungle and gang neighborhoods most people shy away from. The decisions Hoyt is faced with are ones no one wants to be faced with, and he handles them with strong confidence. From the gunfights to the drug seizures, the gang interrogations to the Mexican card game, I can't get enough of this movie. It has style, power, and attitude even Blade can't touch. Maybe I like it more because, being the rap fan that I am, it gives a view of true hood life as opposed to the stupid stuff rappers put on the radio. It teaches you things you've never thought of. And it's cool. SCORE: 10/10 GOOD QUOTE -You shot me in the ass! -Remember that fool in the wheelchair? How'd you think he got there? -You're in the office, baby.
