Donnie Darko - 2001 (R) Actors: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze Director: Richard Kelly Reviewed: 09 May 2005 Yeah, everyone has seen this movie. No one saw it in theaters, but some guy somewhere must've rented it and told all his friends, who told all THEIR friends, and ta-daa! An indie flick that everyone knows about. Everyone I know who was seen this movie fawns over it, probably because they're excited to see a movie that isn't "mainstream". People love stuff that isn't "mainstream". I do too, I won't lie. However, I will say I saw this movie at my cousin's house before it was so well-known, and I didn't think it was that great. Some people flip out when they hear about time travel and they say this movie twists their mind. I say read a book. This movie is weird, not genius. It's just about some giggly kid who sees a creepy rabbit (Frank) who tells him that the world will end soon. Donnie then has to fix things, and wackiness ensues. There's a book about time travel by Roberta Sparrow somewhere in there, and goth-y music plays throughout. The soundtrack is really good, by the way. It has Notorious in it. I like the closing scenes, where a montage of depressed and troubled people are shown, but sometimes the movie just comes off as pretentious. It's a good film, no doubt, but I guess I'm put off by all of its stupid fans thinking it's the next Bible. It's just a film, people! It didn't change your life! Maybe if you read something besides Seventeen you wouldn't be so "amazed" by something that confuses you. There are plenty of better trippy movies out there. *rant over* I'm being harsh, and Donnie Darko is definitely worth seeing. Just be cool about it. SCORE: 8/10 GOOD QUOTE -Why are you wearing that stupid man suit? -Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion! -And how did you feel, being denied these hungry, hungry hippos? BAD QUOTE -If the sky were to suddenly open up, there would be no law, there would be no rule.
