At the bottom of the hill sat an army surplus Land Rover, its heavy tyres and high ground clearance meaning it had little trouble crossing the dark and treacherous fields.
The land rover belonged to Limson who, Walkman blasting her favourite brand of Japanese pop into her ears, was sat at in its drivers seat. She didnt notice Danial till he had opened the passengers door and climbed in. He looked at Limson as she waved frantically at him from the next seat, and hoped that the barbiturates she had taken on the way over, had worn off by now. It was, he reasoned, all very well informing him that she could tailor the drugs to have no unpleasant side effects or addiction, but Danial counted her driving at eighty along winding country roads whilst singing loudly in Japanese as a distinctly unpleasant side effect of her perfect drugs.
She started the engine and carefully rolled the heavy four by four out of the fields, leaving fire, hillside and the now composed euthanatos to their own devices. It wasnt until they were on the road and heading towards Leeds that Danial reached across and pulled the head phones of Limsons head, shed been quiet the whole way there, and her careful driving was a testament to the fact that her drugs must have worn off during the wait. She turned to him and smiled. I take it your friends were as useless as ever? Her freckled face seemed to wrap itself around her grin.
Danial sighed, he found himself doing it a lot these days. Yes, they were useless. The man is obviously dead, what killed him I dont know. He frowned and looked out ahead, hitching one foot up to brace against the dashboard. But I know one thing, if I leave it to that bunch of charlies no one will ever know.
Limson, her Grin slowly falling from her face looked back at the dark road as her headlights cut into the night. Wacha thinking?
Dan shook his head. I think this is gonna have to be us my dear, I know you didnt want to get involved in it, but Im going to need help.
She shuddered involuntarily and stayed silent.
Hey, I know I promised that I wouldnt get dragged into anything, but this is different.
Dan Youre on holiday, its supposed to be fun.
He grinned. Babes, youre an artist, youre always on holiday.
He looked back out the window, regretting saying that, his smile slipped and he could feel the tension in the car increase. He knew he shouldnt have said that, he knew it had been unfair.
Limson concentrated on driving and Dan concentrated on the night time fields going past, he was angry with himself. Why did he have to help? He knew in his heart he had to but why?
Because if I dont, no one will.
Limson turned her head and looked at him confused. What?
Danial, realising he had spoken out loud, carried on staring out the window.
If I dont investigate this one, no one else will, and that means whoever did it could kill again. Limson nodded at his words, she hated it but she knew he would investigate it and knew that he couldnt do it without her help.
Danial stared out of the window watching the fields at night, his eyes cold and impassive. She felt the tug inside her that had first drawn her to him and kept her with him, he wasnt overly attractive, he was insidious. Once you spent a little time in his company, you couldnt help but want to spend more. Shed seen it happen with men and woman, of all ages, the most stern business an or the most  proper lady would find themselves bouncing around in his presence. It was as if he radiated life and anyone around would find themselves swept up by it, given a little of that life. But once he was gone you found it was addictive, you missed it, and she had missed it, so when the possibility of him visiting her had come up she had jumped at the opportunity.
He rummaged in his shorts pocket and pulled out a rather crumpled pack of Camels, she looked over as he dug two out, lit them with a cheap plastic lighter and passed one across to her. His way of a peace offering she guessed, he looked across pitifully. She smiled and took the cigarette, wishing he didnt smoke such a nasty brand.
So then mighty Euthanatos, hunter of killers. Where do we start?
Danial smiled at the title, it was not one he liked, but it amused him.
Well my dear, I guess we start at the beginning.
