Excerpt from Detroit news interview with Mel by Susan Stark, Detroit News Film Critic.

Patient and good-natured if not exactly forthcoming during a long weekend of interviews to promote the opening of We Were Soldiers, the first Australian actor to claim a prime spot on the international movie scene shows up for press duty in jeans and a denim shirt topped by a baggy gray sweater vest.

Shorter and stockier than you might imagine, he is, in person, no tall poppy. With only a pair of ordinary glasses to blunt the impact of his intensely blue eyes, Gibson might easily get lost in the crowd. His attitude and somewhat halting verbal style match his no-frills appearance.
