Presumed guilty until innocence is proven? It
is one of the basic principles of our civilisation that a person is presumed
innocent until guilt is proven. And it's a second principle that we should
not trust what everybody says but try to find out what really happened. -
The immune system is an "army" composed of
cells. -
Immune cells are created by
other cells (the bone marrow cells or stem cells). -
Mason's immune system is destroyed completely.
-
To destroy an immune system completely, you must
eradicate the bone marrow cells. Conclusion:
Mason's marrow cells have been destroyed. -
Marrow cells can be destroyed by chemicals
(chemotherapy) and radiation (X-ray). -
We're told that Incident X was an
"accident". -
In an accident, chemicals (exploded gas tank) and
radiation (exploded nuclear power station) will spread widely and affect many
many people.
-
BUT: There
is no
other person in Genomex who suffers from
the same thing as Mason. Conclusion: Incident X was something
that destroyed marrow cells and was effected
punctually. Radiation
is likely to cause serious cellular damage, and cancers, dramatically
shortening the patient's life expectance (to a couple of days in the worst
case scenario). Chemicals, in a too low dosage, can damage the immune system
without destroying it, and chemicals in a too high dosage can kill the
patient. Mason has no stem cells, but we're not told he has cancer, and
despite his afflictions, his body substance seems to replicate normally, so
his DNA was not affected (otherwise he wouldn't be there anymore). Mason has
no immune system, but he's still kicking. Conclusion: Incident X was something
that destroyed immune cells punctually (Mason's only) and deliberately. A
chemotherapy / radiation session supposed to destroy the immune system
requires special medication, specialised equipment and specially trained
personnel. Adam is treating human beings, and therefore he ideally should
know a thing about medicine. Adam probably is able to perform a chemotherapy, or he co-operates with people who are
trained to do this. Adam has the necessary equipment at hand
(probably Genomex) or he knows where to get it
from. Conclusion: Incident X was a planned
and surveyed medical procedure. Marrow
cells are not eradicated by a singular exposure to radiation / chemicals. A chemotherapy with radiation sessions is an expensive and
long-lasting
affair. The people at Genomex will notice
if Adam is missing. They will notice if things disappear from
their medical cabinet. They will notice if their security chief
does not show up at work for three weeks. Conclusion:
Probably Incident X was not performed at Genomex
(which is unlikely), but at least somebody at Genomex
knew
about it. Incident X was not an action performed in the
closet. Mason and Adam were friends.
Mason trusted Adam. If one is pleased with that one may think of
Mason being abducted and being tortured for three weeks, but it's tasteless
to imagine Mason sitting in an isolation chamber in the Genomex
basement, screaming for help where nobody can hear him, tortured with an
unwanted chemotherapy, or being dragged into the X-ray room at his nose.
However, Mason does not say that he hates Adam so much. He even enjoys
himself posing as Adam's friend. They were friends, they're probably still
friends (sort of), they know each other very well. Given these circumstances,
as Incident X must have been a medical procedure it's a more reasonable
assumption that Mason consented to it.
Now
we get to the point: Why should a sane and sober person consent to a
destruction of his immune system? Because it was necessary. Suppressing
/ destroying an immune system can be mandatory in three cases: (a) Transplantation of
organ or member (b) Bone cancer / bone
marrow diseases (leukaemia or similar) (c) Attempt to make a
mutant (fictional) Making
changes as drastically as in MX maybe is not possible, but basically, making
changes in the DNA IS possible, and has already been
performed in nowaday science (carrier viruses).
People who have been transplanted organs must swallow immune system
suppressors to preserve the organ from being destroyed by their own immune
system. Fictional drastic changes (or mutations) as described in MX affect
practically the whole body. Therefore they must be accompanied by a complete immune system destruction, or else the patient
would be snatched up by his intra-corporal "army", that is
"programmed" to his prior DNA state, and doesn't
"recognise" his "new" body anymore. Now
what Adam did to Mason – it's up to you to figure it out. |
