Adam's Poem (Archer in the Sky)

By Electra Complex

"The sunbeams are my shafts with which I kill
Deceit, that loves the night and fears the day.
All men who do, or even imagine ill
Fly me …" – Percy Bysshe Shelley, Song of Apollo

***

Guardian. Mentor. Doctor. Leader.
Nurturer is what they see
When they look at me, their breeder
What they never see is me

Take no male, abstain from women
Any need I do deny
They're your charges, you're the doctor
Says the Archer in the Sky

HE sends out his shafts for killing … me
For venturing caress
Kill for thinking ill or filling
All your life with – tenderness

Shining archer, cause me sorrow
Call your curse upon my head
Hurt me deep, your gleaming arrows
They won't reach into my bed

Shall *you* judge my sleepless hours?
Nightly, when your eye is dim?
Think it twice! Your shafts are sunbeams
Never go *beneath* the skin.

Mine is flesh, my heart is human
I will take you for a ride
Save their lives – as I am virtuous
Never show the softer side.

Look at me, you won't go stealing
Fingers off the steering wheel
When you're drunk, on drugs, or feeling …
Just don't notice how I feel.

Guardian. Mentor. Warden. Healer.
Sentinel is what you'll see
Fosterer and friend and leader.
What you'll never see is me.
