Prince Paul. Dan the Automator. Kid Koala. Even if you don't know exactly what it is these guys do, you've probably heard their names.
Deltron 3030 is the latest in a series of alternative rap-concept albums to showcase the talents of these hip-hop antiheroes, as well as a surprising cast of extras that includes Kool Keith, Peanut Butter Wolf, and even Sean Lennon. The story's a simple one: Starring Del tha Funkee Homosapien on vocals and Kid Koala on turntables, Deltron is the audio-diary of three friends traveling throughout a post-Armageddon universe in their galactic spaceship. of course, like some other projects these characters have collaborated on, the music has a tendency to take a backseat to the concept. That isn't to say that Deltron 3030 isn't amusing; in fact, sometimes it's quite good. A friendly warning, however, is in order: As tempting as this superstar lineup looks on paper, it isn't exactly the stuff of legend. A fun listen, yes; an album for the ages? Don't count on it.
